Crashed for 16 hours straight after work and woke up with high blood pressure

For context, I’m 21, weigh 160, and work overnight doing a remodel job for Walmart. I started working there in December and have been adjusting to the overnight shift. After work yesterday, I got home, made some food, and passed out around 10 AM. I woke up at 2 AM (roughly 16 hours of sleep) feeling nauseous, with a full bladder, and every eye movement made me dizzy. My blood pressure is at 157/94, and I’m wondering if oversleeping caused it to spike. Any ideas?

If you have access to medical help, you should probably be seen. If that’s not normal for you, it might indicate you should see a doctor. Better to be safe than sorry.

It’s not normal for me because I usually sleep poorly, no more than 7 hours.

@Rory
Yeah, get that checked out. The blood pressure spike is concerning.

Of course, I need to schedule something to get it checked. It didn’t help that I had coffee after waking up, because I’ve gotten into the habit of making coffee right after I wake up.

Just keep aware of your breathing too. Do you have a pulse oximeter to measure your oxygen levels?

I probably have one somewhere; I’ll check it out. I’m not too worried about oxygen levels since I’ve never had issues with that.

Sleep apnea? Also, if you slept 16 hours straight, dehydration, blood sugar, full bladder, etc. could be factors. Do you regularly check your BP?

I don’t normally check my blood pressure; I forget to.

@Rory
How’s your BP now? How are you feeling?

I haven’t checked since roughly 6, but I’m feeling better. I can tell it’s still raised, but I’m drinking water and taking it easy.

@Rory
Good idea. If you feel worse or not much better soon, it might warrant a trip to urgent care. I hope you feel better soon!

I appreciate the concern! If I don’t get better, I will head to urgent care.

Go immediately to the doctor.

Go to your nearest ER/ED or see your medical provider, whichever is faster.
