Due to my job with the railroad, I’m frequently on call and find myself staying awake for 24-36 hours at least twice a week. I’m concerned about the long-term health effects this might have. Any insights?

I had some heart issues earlier this year and had been consuming a lot of energy drinks. Not sure if it’s related to my work hours or the energy drinks, or both.
You should consider changing your shift or even your job if possible. Prolonged periods of sleep deprivation are detrimental to your health. Also, check if there are any labor laws being violated here, you might have grounds to file a complaint.

The issue mainly arises from waiting for calls during my downtime, which makes it hard to sleep. It’s not exactly forced by my employer, but it results from trying to be available.
Extended sleep deprivation has serious implications. I knew a doctor who regularly did all-nighters and suffered multiple health issues after retiring. Try to find a healthier work-life balance.

I’m already seeing the effects with my heart issues. I’m working towards better sleep management and hopefully a more consistent schedule soon.
Have you considered polyphasic sleep? It might help manage sleep better in your situation.
