I'm Sleeping My Life Away

I (30F) am sleeping way too much and it’s making me angry and depressed. I started taking naps at the end of high-school which carried into college and now my adult life. In the summer I would take 1.5-2 hr naps. Now, in the winter in the northeast, I’m taking 4 hour naps after sleeping at night for 10-12 hours. I think my bed has become my safe space. I’ve also been trying to conceive and taking progesterone which is messing me up. And the cold doesn’t help. How do I fix this habit that feels like it’s ruining my life? Please be kind.

Get your thyroid functioning checked

Get bloodwork done for sure. Beyond that, you need something in your life worth staying awake for.

You mention it’s making you depressed. But sleep and depression is a flywheel. Too much sleep and you’re more depressed. So you sleep even more. Which makes you more depressed. Too little sleep and you’re more depressed. So you sleep even less. Which makes you less depressed. Also adding hormones to your body could be making it worse as well. How’s your overall health? Have you actively worked on depression at all? Exercise, vitamin D, and hobbies can all be attainable starting places for addressing the depression. And hopefully good sleep will follow. Also - the bed is for sleep and sex. Nothing else.

Thanks ANAL-FART very insightful

Progesterone makes you extremely tired. Happens to me too. Talk to your Dr and see if you can lighten your dose. Progesterone makes you, sleepy, hungry and moody. Maybe get off completely if you can.

Set an alarm for an hour and a half and then an hour and forty minute alarm and slowly work back from there. The second is to make sure you get up. Your four hour ‘naps’ are more like sleep.

Vitamin D deficiency maybe

Get a gene test and see a Natural doctor

I’ve felt similar things and the only thing that has worked for me is getting your physical and mental health in good shape. Start exercising and thinking about what you eat and drink. Another key was to stop consuming so much content. Content (like YouTube, Netflix, etc.) is super stimulating and makes it easy to stay in bed all day, laughing, crying, and thinking, rather than doing the same in more interesting environments.

Get your blood levels checked. Many people suffer from thyroid issues. Also food you eat might be harder to digest.

Make sure your medication is optimal for treating your depression and daytime sleepiness. Adding Wellbutrin to my morning SSRI helped me improve my sleep hygiene. Protect your sleep: wake up/sleep at regular times daily, avoid the bed and bedroom except for sex and sleep, keep screen technology OUT of the bed, daytime naps to a minimum.

Hey, chill and be kind to yourself. Get some blood tests at the doctor’s as there is more than likely an underlying health reason why your body feels tired. Low iron, thyroid issues, hormonal imbalance, depression can all alter your body’s sleep requirement. Definitely get a check-up as it sounds like it’s causing you concern. And don’t hate yourself! It’s frustrating not to feel right but resting is totally OK. Peace

Could also be burnout or not getting enough morning light or exercise… if so, try morning walks before 10am with eyes or some skin exposed to absorb vitamin D & help regulate your circadian rhythm. Sauna to help adjust to the cold (I’m in New England and this makes a huge difference for me) herbs like evening primrose can help balance hormone levels and restore the nervous system to help recover from burnout symptoms. but check with your midwife if it’s contraindicated for you

Well, I’m the exact same way. First thing is you recognize it. We just have to push ourselves which I know is not what we want to hear…I’m an empty nester, sounds silly but I’ve devoted myself to plants around the house, reading, and trying to face the battle of social anxiety. Go for a 10-minute walk and start by taking some pictures with your camera or phone, let your mind be free, push yourself easy to get out of the house and be with nature, just 10 min. Maybe it helps or not, I hope it does a little :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Something is disturbing your sleep quality. Have bloodwork done. Check thyroid, parathyroid, liver, and pancreas. Check for vitamin and mineral deficiencies. B12, magnesium, and D3 deficiencies cause insomnia. Have allergy testing. Do you know your chronotype? Google ‘chronotype.’ Take the chronotype quiz at SleepDoctor. Get a sleep study. You can order an at-home sleep study online. AXG Sleep Diagnostics, SleepDoctor, Lofta, and Ognomy are some options. Or you can get a prescription from a doctor. The SleepDoctor uses the Philips Alice OneNight sleep study; the same at-home study I received from a neurologist.

You might need B12! Also maybe have your thyroid checked

It’s your diet- try a strict elimination (carnivore diet) for 30 days- it will change your life
