Is it normal to wake up 1-2 times a night to pee? (f32)

Any tips on how to stop waking up during the night to pee?

I wake up 2-3 times a night to pee. My brain keeps convincing me that I won’t be able to sleep unless I go. It’s so frustrating!

Waking up 1-2 times can be normal, especially if you drink liquids close to bedtime or have caffeine or alcohol in the evening. Try cutting off fluids a couple of hours before bed. Also, check your sleep environment—it shouldn’t be too cold since that can make your bladder feel more urgent.

Have you considered taping your mouth at night? Mouth breathing can lead to dehydration and increase nighttime urination. Nasal breathing helps with hormone regulation, like ADH, which reduces urine production at night. If you’re curious, I can share more info!

I wake up a few times to pee, and I’d love to see the studies about mouth taping! Definitely willing to give it a try. Thanks for the suggestion.

Nasal breathing improves oxygen exchange and supports ADH balance, which helps control urine production. Mouth breathing can cause dehydration, making your body produce more urine. Here’s a link to a study about it: https://www.frontiersin.org/journals/physiology/articles/10.3389/fphys.2021.744177/full. It’s fascinating, right?

I’m 20 and wake up 2-3 times a night to pee. It seems normal to me, maybe even on the lower end compared to others.

I do too because I drink a lot of water, but it’s disruptive since I also have insomnia. Maybe try cutting back on fluids before bed and see if it helps.

I used to wake up 1-2 times, but it increased over time. Nocturnal polyuria can be linked to things like hyperthyroidism, menopause, or sleep apnea. Might be worth checking into.

Normally, your body should release antidiuretic hormone at night, which reduces urine production. Alcohol, nicotine, and stress (via cortisol) can interfere with this process, causing more frequent nighttime urination.

Yes, it’s normal for some people.

If you drink a lot before bed, then yes, it’s normal. I try to avoid too much liquid in the evening for this reason. If you feel rested during the day, it’s probably fine.

I usually wake up once, rarely twice, but I also drink two big glasses of water before bed every night. It’s just my habit.

I’ve been waking up 1-5 times a night to pee for as long as I can remember. Usually it’s about twice a night, but it depends on how much I drank before bed. Everyone’s different!

At your age, I’d say it’s not typical. I used to wake up 1-2 times but found sugar intake affected my bladder. Limiting sugar really helped me. It could also be about what you’re drinking before bed or even an early sign of a medical issue. Start tracking it just in case.

This happened to me before I started using a CPAP. Turns out I have severe sleep apnea. If you sleep deeply, you usually won’t feel the need to pee until morning.
