Is it really possible to go 11 months without sleep? I'm struggling... Can researchers help me?

I’m in a really tough spot. I never feel tired at all. I try to sleep but I just lie there awake all night. It’s like torture for me.

What if you have actually been sleeping for 11 months and just waking up now?

That would be the end of a nightmare, thank god :joy:

There is a genetic condition that prevents people from sleeping completely. No napping. I can’t remember the name. If you think you haven’t slept, ask your doctor for a referral.

@Kim
Are you talking about FFI?

Yeah, that’s probably it. I can’t remember the exact name. Just remember reading about it once.

Yes, I just looked it up.

You really need a proper sleep assessment. Try going to a university sleep clinic.

@Kim
This is a rare symptom! You should definitely see a doctor!

You know about FFI, so you know what those folks go through. You either need to get to a top sleep clinic, or you might be experiencing a condition where people believe they’re not sleeping while scans show otherwise. I’m very familiar with that.

That’s hilarious!

So I’m a sleep technician. I place electrodes on people and monitor their sleep. Many patients tell me they haven’t slept at all, saying: 0 hours, 0 minutes. But I check their results, and usually, they have slept for 3-4 hours, just not well. They’re often unaware of it. This is sometimes called Paradoxical Insomnia or Sleep State Misperception. I’d recommend getting a sleep study done, especially if you haven’t already. Ask your doctor for a referral.

@Sam
I knew someone who had very vivid dreams about not falling asleep. He thought he was in his bedroom every night, convinced that his brain was racing and he couldn’t relax. He crashed at my place once after drinking too much, insisting on sleeping on the carpet. He fell asleep almost immediately. I had trouble sleeping that night, so I was up reading for a few hours. I kept asking him if he was asleep, getting louder each time. In the morning, he insisted he hadn’t slept a wink, but he was out for at least four and a half hours. His family thought he wasn’t sleeping too. He didn’t seem to suffer from sleep deprivation either. He works out hard and recovers better than I do, even with less sleep. If OP hasn’t had any sleep for that long, something is definitely off. They need a professional to check in.

@Sam
I’ve been asking for this. It’s 3am and I’m still awake… I get what you mean about sleep state misconceptions. I don’t sleep at all.

You might not realize that you are. That’s how Sleep State Misperception works. It’s much more likely you are not aware of when you’re sleeping rather than being a superhuman.

@Sam
He admitted in another thread that he sleeps for a minute here and there.

Yeah, he also mentioned having some vivid dreams. I believe dreams are often more vivid during REM sleep, which takes time to reach. So OP is probably falling asleep. There may still be insomnia if not enough sleep is happening, but it doesn’t seem like he’s getting no sleep at all. I’ve had nights where I can’t tell if I slept or not. OP might be going through that often.
