My Apple Watch shows I'm not getting enough deep sleep. Is this normal?

I looked up how much deep sleep adults should get, and it’s between 1.5 to 2 hours each night. According to my Apple Watch, over the last six months, I’ve only averaged 49 minutes of deep sleep per night, even though I sleep for about 9 hours. I’m only 20 years old, and although the need for deep sleep decreases with age, I’m concerned I’m not getting enough. My current sleep schedule is from 8 PM to 3:30 AM since I work early. By 5 PM, I’m very tired, but I can sleep immediately at 8 PM. I’m unsure if this is typical or if there’s something I should adjust.

I’ve had a similar issue with a Garmin watch. Remember, wrist sleep trackers aren’t always accurate. Focus more on how rested you feel during the day. If the watch is causing you stress, try sleeping a few nights without it and see how you feel. If you’re sleeping well and waking up rested, then it’s probably nothing to worry about.

@Vale
Thanks, I generally feel okay during the day, but sometimes I wake up earlier than needed, and I can’t fall back asleep. I’ve had sleep problems before, which is why I started using the watch.

I stopped using sleep trackers because they were making me anxious and actually worsening my sleep.

You’re lucky. I don’t need a watch to know I’m not sleeping well!

Sleep tracking with anything less than EEG is quite inaccurate. Those stages the watch shows might not reflect the truth.

That’s a good point. I’m considering getting an EEG monitor. I never feel truly refreshed when I wake up; I usually start feeling better after some fresh air later in the day.

If you’re having trouble sleeping, you might try listening to soothing music or using a white noise machine. It improved my sleep, and it might work for you too.

That sounds like a good idea. I use background noise during the day but never thought to use it for sleeping. Thanks for the suggestion!

The Apple Watch isn’t great at tracking sleep. I switched to an Oura ring, and the data seems more accurate. Don’t stress too much; when I used both, the Apple Watch often showed less deep sleep than the Oura ring.
