12hrs of sleep ruining my life

Hello, I am trying to understand how I can help my consistent 12-15hrs of sleep from impacting my daily life. On many days I don’t wake up till the evening meaning I struggle to get an early night to attend lectures for university. This is severely impacting my mental health. I’m getting increasingly worried that this is going to impact my studies as I frequently miss classes as I cannot wake up (sometimes I don’t see daylight for many days). I did contact the doctors who gave me antidepressants but they don’t seem to be working. I hope someone can help. Thank you.

I went through the same thing, currently going through something similar. What helps is having a goal or something important to do. Start trying to have morning lectures, so you have a reason to wake up. If that doesn’t work then rely on someone else to wake you up and stop you from going back to bed, like a roommate or friend. I would recommend seeing your doctor again though, and sometimes antidepressants make you more ‘numb’ which can affect your excitement for the day. Good luck, I hope you fix your problem.

Thank you for your response. I have had issues my whole life with finding motivation to do anything, even if I enjoy it, but I shall try again! This issue has been going on for about 1 year for context.

Have you done a sleep study yet? It could be you’re suffering from sleep apnea or another sleep-related disorder where you’re not fully entering or sustaining REM, making your sleep long and unproductive. Otherwise, Prozac (a stimulant) boosted my energy when I took it briefly. If nothing else works, maybe look at whether a diet without a full breadth of nutrition & protein, as well as exercise, might be making you lethargic.

I do plan on ringing the doctors again, it’s just by the time I wake up they are closed. I am trying to change my diet although I’m very picky with food and almost have no vegetables in my diet which is definitely impacting my health.

I can’t imagine how frustrating that must feel. I had a friend with a similar problem, and she used an online/remote sleep study program where they ship you the supplies to track your sleep, and you send it back for analysis. She found out it was anemia and after taking supplements, she was really glowing! Maybe a yummy gummy vitamin and an ensure before bed? Best of luck!

@Weston
Thank you for this, I will definitely check this out! Let’s just hope I can fix it!

Damn this sounds like my life fr. I’m still trying to find the answer myself.

I managed to fix it for about 2 weeks but then my body decided to sleep for 20hrs and it ruined it again :frowning:

@Tal
Omg yeah I totally relate to that. I be sleeping through my alarms and I have to tell my friend to call me so that I’m awake.

Do you get nightmares every night? I’m trying to figure out if it’s related or not.

@Tal
Honestly I don’t be getting nightmares but I think you should definitely get back to your doctors!
