How do people sleep on soft mattresses?

I’ve been visiting home for the holidays and sleeping on a soft mattress that’s wreaking havoc on my back. I find myself waking up every half hour to adjust my position because my back sinks below my legs and head, causing a lot of pain. I’m almost tempted to sleep on the floor instead! How do people manage this?

Everyone has different preferences for mattress firmness, often influenced by their weight and preferred sleeping position. Heavier people might sink too much into soft mattresses, causing spinal misalignment and back pain. It sounds like you might need a firmer mattress to support your spine properly.

There’s a difference between a soft mattress that supports and one that simply sags. A good quality soft mattress should still offer adequate support and conform to your body without causing misalignment.

Exactly! Support is key, even with soft mattresses.

Visiting home, I encountered the opposite issue with a firm mattress. As a side sleeper, it was really tough, and I had to keep switching positions to avoid shoulder pain. It’s all about what your body needs for a comfortable alignment.

Adjusting your shoulder position can help, even on a firm mattress. I find firm mattresses more comfortable and even sleep on the floor when needed.

@Quincy
I’ve found that on a firmer mattress, my body stays more aligned, which is more comfortable for me. Soft mattresses tend to let my back sink, creating pressure.

As someone who’s lightweight, I find soft mattresses, even those designed for kids, to be very comfortable. It really depends on your body weight and personal comfort.

Sometimes a soft mattress just doesn’t work, and I’ve had to resort to sleeping on the floor in some hotels. It’s uncomfortable but preferable to a painful back.

Could improving your core strength help manage the discomfort on a soft mattress?

I’ve found that sleeping on something as firm as a rock or a stiff floor mat helps me sleep better, despite needing a stiff pillow to prevent numb limbs. Sometimes, the firmness of the floor can be more comfortable.

I find it hard to understand how anyone can sleep on a hard mattress; soft ones are so much more comfortable for me.
