I’ve been taking 18 mg of melatonin daily for like years

i’ve been taking melatonin for a few years and i’ve been slowly upping my dose when i feel like i need more i’m at 18 mg right now and I just googled the recommended dose and it’s 5mg. Is something going to happen?

Honestly melatonin is NOT regulated by the fda so the amount of variance in each individual pill can vary wildly and often do. So I would try to look into more controlled brands that market their consistency of dose.

I just asked my doctor about this last month. She said she took 15 mg per night. She said no worries. Here say, but that’s what I was told.

I asked my doctor about this once, he told me no more than 10mg per night, but he didn’t say it in a “if you do you’re gonna die” way, it was more of a “it’s not suggested for who knows why” way

Not suggested because your body stops making enough of it and relies on you doing it and if you don’t have access to your standard dose, you’ll have gnarly insomnia for ‘who knows how long’ until your body readjusts. OP should ween down for sure.

If, maybe you should not take them for a long time. On my Melatonine box it’s written “do not take them more than 3 weeks in a row”

Honestly I take 20mg per night. I will for the rest of my life. I am absolutely in love with the antioxident properties of this supplement, and so that’s the motive behind my decision.

However, 18mg purely for sleep alone is gonna make you rely on the medication to fall asleep. I would slowly try to wean off, taking 1 less mg a week would be the safest bet.

Ideally you wanna be at a point where you’re taking around 0.3mg to sleep. As that seems to align the best with our natural production.
