Why do I feel bad in the morning even when I sleep 8-10 hours?

For several years I had a poor sleep pattern and went to bed at about 2-4 am which made me feel terrible in the morning. The last two days I finally slept more than 6 hours and I still feel terrible when I wake up. I already think about death often, and this terrible feeling in the morning and during the day makes me even more suicidal. What should I do? Even taking melatonin doesn’t help me feel better

it could be a sign of depression or anxiety.

Yeah melatonin does the same to me, it’s kinda not great for people with anxiety or depression.

not to get off topic from the sleep question but it might not have been the right antidepressant for you- some can make you wired, but the same medication can make someone else tired. a medication might work well for one person, but not at all for another. if you want to resume antidepressants it’s worth trying out different ones- you might find one that helps your sleep, in fact. it’s a hassle trying out different ones but when you find one that works the difference can be night and day.

but on topic, maybe you’re the type of person who just needs more hours of sleep than average. 6 hours is considered a little on the low side, 8-9 hours is considered “normal,” but some people need even more than that, and there’s nothing wrong with that unless it starts to impact your daily life (:person_raising_hand: that’s me! sleeping over 12 hours a day over here!). if you’re the type who needs more than 8 hours, it’s going to take more than just a few days of sleeping 8 hours to undo the funk of being chronically sleep deprived.

is there something preventing you from sleeping more than 6 hours? like are you having a hard time falling asleep and staying asleep, or are you just staying up too late?

it could also be the opposite and sleep-deprivation causing or amplifying the mental health issues

Melatonin helps you fall asleep, not feel less terrible in the morning. It can also cause nightmares and bad dreams which can impact the quality of your sleep. Even with more sleep, you might feel bad if you wake up in the middle of a sleep cycle (due to alarm) as opposed to naturally. You might feel bad with 10 hours of sleep because it’s just too much and can promote those feelings of depression. Nothing wrong with a lovely 10 hours sleep on a Saturday to make up for the exhaustion of the week but doing that consistently might not make you feel great.

Also, what do you mean by “feel bad” when you wake up?

@Wyatt
by this I mean that in the morning I feel nauseous, disoriented and sick

I’ve only ever felt like that if I got a really short sleep and/or if I had to wake up super early to go to the airport. Are you taking any medication that could be causing this?

Poor sleep quality. Could be signs of depression

I have a circadian rhythm disorder and when I sleep out of sync with my natural rhythm it’s like it doesn’t even count and only the hours aligned with my body clock give me adequate rest. You may be experiencing something similar.

You need at least month of regular sleep to start feeling better

Are you drinking coffee first thing in the AM ? It can really mess you up
