I recently tried 5mg melatonin tablets to improve my sleep, being a night owl. However, the effects were overwhelming. Almost immediately, I felt off-balance and extremely drowsy. To mitigate this, I halved the tablet, which led to severe symptoms like near fainting, sweating, and a racing heart. I induced vomiting out of fear, which helped normalize my condition. It turns out, the powdered form of melatonin I inadvertently consumed is potent. Also, combining it with even a small amount of alcohol exacerbated the reaction. If you’re considering melatonin, start with a low dose and be mindful of its potent effects, especially in powder form.
The natural production of melatonin by the pineal gland is much less than what these supplements provide, often leading to overdosage symptoms similar to what you described. Many people don’t realize that lower doses are often more effective and safer.

I was surprised to find out how excessive the doses in supplements are compared to natural levels. It’s frustrating trying to find a dose that feels safe and effective.

For those struggling with sleep issues, exploring CBT for insomnia might be a better long-term solution than relying on supplements, as it addresses underlying issues without the need for substances.
I’ve experienced increased anxiety in the mornings after taking melatonin, which seems to be a common side effect for some. Reducing the dosage helped significantly reduce my anxiety.

That’s good to know. I’ve had issues with anxiety and nightmares, so I’ll consider adjusting my intake or stopping it to see if that helps.
It’s important to only split pills that are designed to be divided. Uneven distribution of ingredients can lead to unpredictable doses, which might explain your reaction.

Definitely a lesson learned the hard way. I’ll be more cautious with medications in the future.
