I haven't slept for 1.5 yrs. I want to cry. Please help

I wake up every single night from about 1-4am

I am exhausted. Last night, i got up at about midnight,couldn’t fall back asleep until 4am. Got up at 8am.

This has been going on for 1.5 years.

The moment I get up in the middle of the night, all these thoughts start passing through my mind.
It’s not terrible or anything, but they don’t stop. It’s incessant. And I just can’t get back to sleep until I’m exhausted.

I’m taking magnesium & I’ve taken melatonin. And still.
I’m walking 20k steps a day, and still. My diet is generally healthy.
The only thing that really helps is if I stuff myself with food during dinner, but that’s with things like kebabs and snack packs. Then I can sleep through the night. I want to be healthier though.

What can I do?

Thank you

Edit: I just want to say thank you to everyone. i really cannot believe how many responded and genuinely gave me information. i think the biggest thing has been, so many people seemed to care and are genuinely wanting to help, it’s such a nice thing to see. i’ll be referring back to this again and again. i really do want to say thank you to everyone here who has taken the time to write a comment & give some really helpful info that i wouldn’t have otherwise known.

Hey, I am having troubles sleeping as well (waking up at 4am-ish, then shit sleep until getting up at 8am). I went through many threads on this forum, and I am pretty sure in my case it is related in a way or another with my lifting (like when I stop for a week, my sleep gradually improves). In the past couple weeks it came to my mind that it could actually be related to posture and bloodflow (idk, like larger/more tense muscles and lack of mobility specifically around my back and shoulders fucking up the bloodflow or something). This said, I’ve been searching quite a bit on the internet and this forum and you’re the first comment I see related to posture and bloodflow… Do you have any more info to give? Have you experienced bad sleep because of that?

@Riley
Interesting! I recently injured my calf pretty bad and had to stop walking and lower body exercises- so I just stopped exercising at all in general- being lazy lol - and I took magnesium and allowed myself to eat carbs guilt free- magically I slept through the night for over 2 weeks straight! It was amazing!! Sometimes I wonder if all this exercise is perceived stress flight or fight - IDK just sharing my observations.

@Kendall
Idk if you went to other threads about sports and insomnia, but many people seem to say that causes of insomnia can be: not enough calories in in general, not enough carbs at night (some have a small snack with carbs and or protein before bed or even when waking up during the night; many people seem to think this is our body perceiving not to have enough food and entering a fright or flight mode in the middle of the night), and many others.

Also, based on what I read and my own experience, walking (or even running) does not seem to be the issue, but def the anaerobic stuff like your lower body training!

100% this. If you absolutely need caffeine then switch to tea or matcha.

Also, don’t eat within 3 hours of bedtime.

Melatonin can give weird dreams/nightmares to some people. I’d suggest testing for Sleep Apnea. There are At-Home Tests that are really simple.

Can confirm strange melatonin dreams. Had a dream that I was with my child at a gymnastics gym when Ron DeSantis came in and asked me to remove a stain from his coat.

@Van
Thanks - It’s time for a sleep study. Mine is getting worse and worse… nightmares, chronically exhausted and most worrisome late to work or a zombie when I’m there. I wonder if it’s partially covered by insurance?

@Zinnia
Yes it should be. Typically it’s covered at least partially by most insurances.

Doctors don’t help in this situation. I know because I have exactly the same issue and have been to more doctors than any hypochondriac would, in vain.

A doctor can totally help in this situation. A good combo of Trazadone and Lunesta helped me. I’m sorry your doctors sucked but that in no way means they all do.
