Is it really possible to go 11 months without sleep? I'm struggling... Can researchers help me?

You might be experiencing microsleep. Check this out: Microsleep: Symptoms, Causes, and Safety Risks | Sleep Foundation

I haven’t had a car for four months now for safety reasons, but I definitely don’t notice these moments. I feel wired 24/7 like a rabbit in headlights.

@Kingsley
That makes sense. I’ve had microsleep moments, and it can feel like you’re awake. Your body forces you to sleep just enough to survive.

How long will this last? I can’t live like this; it’s awful.

@Kingsley
I recommend talking to a doctor. I felt it most while working overnight jobs and pulling all-nighters in college. If there’s no clear reason you can’t fall asleep, a sleep study could help.

@Kingsley
You experience it in microseconds or sometimes minutes, depending on what wakes you up. Could be anything from a crashing car to your body hitting the floor when you fall asleep reaching for something. It will happen, and you often won’t notice it until it does. Just set up a 24-hour live feed and hit record for safety and proof.

If you go to the ER, they might give you a shot of intravenous valium which will definitely knock you out. They did that for my ex who had hiccups for 48 hours.

I’ve been to the ER ten times over the last year, maybe more. All they did was give me 5mg of diazepam and send me on my way.

@Kingsley
Have you seen a sleep specialist? They would know about this condition.

They just did CBT-I, but whenever I go to bed, I don’t sleep.

Wow, you might need to check yourself into an inpatient facility where they can monitor you.

@Reagan
I asked them, but they won’t take me.

I’ve been to several inpatient facilities, and I can’t imagine that’s true. Was it not covered by insurance? That would make sense. You might need to pay out of pocket. If you tell them you’re unwell, anxious, and not sleeping, they have to take you. Honestly, tell them you’re suicidal.

@Reagan
I’ve said all that. They still said no. I told them I’d kill myself, but they didn’t care. They said there are no beds, and they are discharging me from local support services too.

Call every mental health facility every week and tell them you’re suicidal. A bed will eventually open up. If this isn’t just talk, and you truly might only have six months left without sleep, you have nothing to lose. Why did they discharge you from local support?

Which country or state are you in? Different states have various hotlines you can call, some of which will send a mobile unit to help you. Many beds are state-funded, which means you may need the right intake.

Could you try a major medical center in a nearby town or city?

Have you consulted a doctor? Fatal familial insomnia is a serious issue. The longest anyone has survived it is about 18 months.

Doctors say there’s nothing more they can do. Sleep meds and benzos don’t help either.

I’m really sorry you’re struggling with sleep. You are getting some sleep, just not consciously. I know this isn’t what you want to hear, but it’s impossible to stay awake for 11 months—if you did, you’d be dead from lack of sleep.
